Battle of the Bird

September 4, 2007

You never notice just how many “ledges” a building has until you take note of how many birds come to perch on, poop on and roost on them.  Simply put… the Old Wilson is battling the bird – Pigeon that is!

Recently we have discovered just how many pigeons have been calling the ledges of the Wilson home.  It has been a poop & scoop fest as we have been cleaning the window sills & brick ledges and sidewalks below the bird hang outs.  We have tried to get them to leave in many humane ways – to no avail - - the birds have been defeating our every effort.

We went to work researching just how to encourage our birding brood to find a new home without hurting them.  Beautiful as they are – they make more poop mess than their beauty beholds.  Our research lead us to the method of pigeon control that national and state monuments, many historical buildings and public works of art use to control pigeons from taking over the structure – the “Plastic Bird Inhibitor.”

The next step in the battle will be to install the “bird inhibitor strips” – these strips are a humane answer to keeping the pigeons from roosting and pooping.  The plastic strips have several ‘pokey fingers’ per inch and keep the birds from being able to land and hang out on the ledges.  The birds naturally find another place to hang out. These strips do not injure the birds in any way.

So if in the coming weeks you are passing by the Wilson and wonder what happened to all the pigeons - - rest assured they have found a new home.  :-)
